A team of students of Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering has won the 2016 IESL E.W. Karunaratne award for the best undergraduate project in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, for the project titled"Auto Resonant Wireless Energy Transmission". The team comprises of three final year undergraduates, Mr. Athula Kumara, Mr. Sandeep Batewala and Ms. Deshika Dharmasena. The project was supervised by Dr. J.V. Wijayakulasooriya and Dr. S.A.H.A. Suraweera. The award ceremony was held at BMICH on 14/09/2016.
Professor WM Tilakaratne, Professor of Oral Pathology and Dean Faculty of Dental Sciences has been inducted as the President of the International Association of Oral Pathologists. The induction ceremony was held on 10th September 2016 in India at the 18th World Congress on Oral Pathology and Medcine. He was inducted by the outgoing President of the world body Professor Michael Aldred from Australia.
Liyanage Amarakeerthi, professor in Sinhala at the faculty of Arts, won the Sawarnapustaka Award for his novel Ahambakaraka. It was professor Amarakeerthi's fourth novel and his third novel, Kurulu Hadawata also won the Swarnapustaka Award in 2014. Prestigious Swarna Pustaka Award is given to the 'best' novel of the year.
The Department of Physiotherapy, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences at the University of Peradeniya successfully conducted Sri Lanka‚Äôs first scientific congress in Physiotherapy - ‚ÄúPeradeniya University Physiotherapy Congress 2016‚ÄĚ with more than 175 participants on 9th, 10th and 11th September 2016 at the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, University of Peradeniya.
A two day training program on ‚ÄúMinute Keeping‚ÄĚ was conducted by the Staff Development Center (SDC) of the University of Peradeniya for stenographers of the University. It was held on 2nd and 3rd September 2016 at the auditorium of the SDC from 9.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. Thirty four staff members participated at the training program.
The 26th Asian Economic Symposium- 2016 was successfully held on the 20th August, 2016 at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. The Asian Economic Symposium is a joint symposium which has been previously called, the ‚ÄúInternational Joint Symposium of Japan, Korea and China‚ÄĚ, which has been launched in the year 1990 at Saga University, Japan.
Seven selected media personnel from SAARC countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka) visited the Faculty of Agriculture from 12-15 July 2016 to witness the success of the multi-country research project on ‚ÄúVulnerability of Home Garden Systems to Climate Change and its Impacts on Food Security in South Asia‚Äú.
The Library Network of the University of Peradeniya in collaboration with the International Research Center (INRC) successfully completed a Workshop on Bibliometric & Scientometric Analysis for Research Management for university academics, librarians, information specialists from 01 to 03 August 2016 at the IDAS Computer Laboratory, NAT Building, Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya.
Miss Thilini Dissanayake, a third year student of the Faculty of Agriculture of University of Peradeniya has participated in the 2nd Asia University 3 X 3 Basketball Championship which was held from 18th to 24th July 2016 in Macao, China representing the National University Basketball Women's Team of the country. Twenty two teams from among 12 countries and regions spreading over the Asia took part in the tournament.

A delegation from the Australian Institute of International Affairs visited the University of Peradeniya on the 20th July, 2016. Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. R. L. Wijeyeweera, Dr. Nanda Gunawardhana, Director of the International Research Centre represented the University of Peradeniya at the meeting held at the Office of the Vice Chancellor.
2nd international conference on ‚Äúoral cancer, smokeless tobacco and areca nut‚ÄĚ organized by the centre for research in oral cancer (CROC) was successfully completed on 2nd July 2016 at the CPC hall, Faculty of Dental Sciences. The theme of the event was ‚Äúcombat oral cancer ‚Äď preserve lives".
A ‚Äú Pirith Deshanaya‚ÄĚ was held in Sir Ivor Jennings Hall on 15th June 2016 with participation of warden, Dr RMC Deshapriya, Accommodation Director Mr Siriwardena, Sub-warden Mr. Wickramarathna and Several other wardens , sub-wardens and students. This is an annual event which is organized by students of the hall committee and staff, expecting blessing to the Late Sir Ivor Jenning and to the students and the staff of the hall.
Above function was held, Vice-Chancellor as the chief guest and Dr RM Mudiyanse of Faculty of Medicine as the guest of honor. Out of 79 undergraduates 61 was eligible to obtain their white coat at the ceremony. Students had to pass previous examinations (maximum number of referred subjects that can be carried over is 1) and they must not have had any report on misbehavior as an undergraduate.
The thirty first Annual General Meeting of the Marrs Hall Alumni Association was held on June 05, 2016 at the Marrs Hall of University of Peradeniyia. This is the second consecutive time the AGM was held at the Marrs hall with participation of over thirty five alumni, mostly graduated in sixties and early seventies.
The official launching and Signing of the Agreement for the provision of the first phase of SLT Wi-Fi Internet facility to the University of Peradeniya was held on the 27th of May 2016 at the Senate Room presided by the Vice Chancellor Professor Upul B. Dissanayake and the Chairman of Sri Lanka Telecom Mr. P. G. Kumarasinghe.
The Students and the Staff of Hilda Obeysekara Hall organized their annual ‚ÄúVesak Dansala‚ÄĚ on 21st May 2016 as part of Vesak Poya Programmes. Students of the Faculty of Agriculture donated dry rations worth of over Rs. 75,000.00 to the Delthota Divisional Secretariat on May 29th to be distributed among displaced by recent earth slips caused by extreme weather conditions. Students visited few camps where the displaced are currently housed and distributed food items among them.
The university administration has taken a decision to convert the university in to an eco- campus by proactive interventions to conserve resources and the environment. The Department of Agricultural Extension of the Faculty of Agriculture, moved to a new premise located in the left wing of the main administrative complex of the faculty. An official ceremony was planned by the staff and the students of the Department on 21st of March, 2016 to commence work. Prof. Upul Dissanayake, the Vice Chancellor of the University, graced the opening ceremony as the chief guest.
