The Special Needs Resource Centre (SNRC) situated in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Peradeniya, was the brain child of Classics don Prof. Wimal Weerakkody. The SNRC was set up several years ago using funds from the World Bank, to provide some basic facilities to the special needs of differently abled students. These funds have dried up and the University of Peradeniya is now unable to provide adequate facilities to the SNRC and these students who maybe vision, hearing, speech and/or mobility impaired.

The Western Australia Chapter of Alumni Association University of Peradeniya, through the parent body of the Alumni Association University of Peradeniya, made a generous donation of funds to improve some facilities at the SNRC. The equipment was handed over to Prof. Athula Senaratne, Vice Chancellor University of Peradeniya, by Prof. Savitri Kumar, President/AAUP,  during a simple ceremony held on 23rd Tuesday October 2012 at the Seminar Room of the Faculty of Arts. The donation of equipment for the SNRC was made in the presence of the seventeen students and a few staff members of the SNRC, staff members from the Faculty of Arts and members of the AAUP ExCo.
