The first stage of the development of the Library of the Faculty of Dental Sciences (FDS) was ceremonially opened by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Harischandra Abeygunawardena on the 7 th of July 2008 in the presence of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Registrar and the Librarian of the University of Peradeniya .

Addressing the gathering, the Dean Professor Prasad Amaratunga said that a decent library within the Faculty premises had been a long felt need. He further stated that a large majority of the academic staff and almost the entire dental student-population have shown their interest in having a library for the Faculty. Apart form the Dental undergraduate programme, FDS also conducts training programmes for Dental Surgery Assistants, Dental Technologists and trainees of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine. Further, the Faculty of Dental Sciences will soon advertise the Postgraduate MSc courses in various disciplines of Dentistry to attract both local and foreign students from the regional countries. Hence, a Faculty Library is a need of the hour. Professor Amaratunga thanked the Librarian, Mr. Harrison Perera and Senior Assistant Librarian, Mrs Sriyani Perera for their support.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Harischandra Abeygunawardena and the Librarian Mr. Harrison Perera pledged their fullest support for the development of the Faculty Library.Vice chancellor further highlighted the importance of seeking support from NGOs and Faculty Alumni too.
