The Unit for Development of Dental Education was established to take responsibility for all matters concerning the educational processes of the Faculty of Dental Sciences. This includes all activities that improve and enhance student learning, in the broad areas of
- Curriculum revision
- Improvement of teaching / learning activities and
- Educational research
Revision of the Undergraduate Curriculum
Key points
- The revision aims to address these issues in three main stages, rather than a one-time change.
- Stage 1 is planned in detail at the current time.
- The main changes to be introduced in Stage1 are :
- Incorporating the Industrial Training Program
- Re-organization of the clinical training of the final BDS part I and part II
- Introducing Comprehensive Patient Care
- Advanced treatment procedures
- Advanced surgical attachment
- Research project (common to all clinical disciplines)
- The duration of the BDS programme is recast as 10 semesters or 5 academic years
- Attention is paid to details of implementation of the changes, to ensure smooth transition and to minimize problems.
- A mechanism for monitoring continued evaluation and consequent modifications needs to be set in place.
Main features of stage 1 of the revised curriculum
- Year 1 (semesters 1 &2 ) will remain as at present
- The revisions will be introduced from year 2 to year 5 (semester 3-10).
