The University of Peradeniya has decided to build an Art Gallery & Museum to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the University (2002). The estimated cost of construction is about Rs.30 Million. Since the funds are not forthcoming from the Government, it has been decided to raise funds for the project from well wishers and the alumni. As such the Alumni Association of the University of Peradeniya (AAUP) has undertaken the funding and designing of the building complex.

Mr. Ian Goonetileke has donated an invaluable collection of books and George Keyt paintings. Professor D.J. Kalupahana has donated his collection of books on Pali & Buddhist Studies. All these invaluable gifts and donations need a place to house them. An Art Gallery to display the invaluable paintings that have been donated as well as the creative works of our students; and a museum for the artifacts of historical significance to the University of Peradeniya.

The building complex will be located on the beautiful slope above Jayathilake Hall. The building will house exhibition areas, a souvenir shop, visiting lounge, coffee shop and lecture theatre.

The architectural designs have been drawn by the well-known architect, Ashley de Vos. A special feature of this plan is its modular design that enables us to build in stages as funds come in.

The funds collected as at November 2004 is around 04 million. It is noteworthy mention here that the donation of Rs. 2 Million made by Mr. Bandula Weerawardena through the Colombo chapter of the Alumni Association of the University of Peradeniya.

You could make your contribution towards this project.
