The Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture (PGIA) of the University of Peradeniya, the only such institute in Sri Lanka, has been in existence since 1975, offering postgraduate degrees of M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. in the broad area of agricultural sciences. The first Congress of the PGIA was held in 1989 and it became an annual event thereafter. Over the years the PGIA Congress has evolved into a recognized scientific event among postgraduate students and scientists in agriculture and related fields.

 

OBJECTIVES:


The objectives of the Congress are to:

Provide a forum for postgraduate research presentation, discussion and debate.

Promote postgraduate research 

Disseminate research findings in collaboration with other relevant institutions.

Stimulate interactions among postgraduate students and scientists of different universities and institutions within Sri Lanka and the region

CONGRESS SITE:


The Congress will be held in Kandy (the hill capital of Sri Lanka), located 110 km from Colombo. Kandy has a mild and cool climate year round with an average temperature of 250C. The city attracts a large number of local pilgrims, visitors and foreign tourists the year round due to its historical significance and the rich cultural life. The university is located 6 km from the city of Kandy.

The Congress will be conducted in English.

KEY DATES TO REMEMBER:

CALL FOR PAPERS AND POSTERS:

Paper and poster presentations are invited in all fields of agriculture from postgraduate students.  All papers and posters will be reviewed by two expert referees prior to acceptance.  The presentations must be based on research completed after June 30, 2000 or on-going research work towards a postgraduate degree by the first author.  The results should not have been presented elsewhere.

The journal "Tropical Agricultural Research, Vol. 14, 2002" (ISSN: 1016-1422) will publish only papers presented at the Congress and summaries of exhibited posters.

SUBJECTS: 

Paper or poster presentations should be in any field related to agriculture, genetics and breeding, biotechnology, horticulture, forestry and agroforestry, agri-business management, statistics and bio-statistics, livestock production, fisheries and food technology covering technical, socio-economic and environmental aspects.

AWARDS: 

  Presentations in each session will be evaluated. Those achieving a high standard of professional excellence will receive awards. A paper must be presented by the first author to be eligible for an award. 

  A limited number of travel grants will be available for paper presenters from the SAARC countries.

FOREIGN PARTICIPANTS: 

Travel to Kandy is possible by coach or by train. Transport (travel to Kandy from Airport and from the PGIA, Peradeniya to the Congress venue) will be provided by the PGIA.

 

Please inquire from your travel agents regarding visa requirements to Sri Lanka.

ACCOMMODATION: 

Accommodation with a wide range of facilities and charges is available. Hotel and Guest House rates vary from US$ 10 to US$ 125 in Kandy.
