THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE
(By Course Work Only)
The M.Sc. degree will be awarded to a person who has successfully completed a programme of study of at least three terms' duration as a full time student.
Admission Requirements
In order to be eligible for admission to the programme of study prescribed for the M.Sc. degree, a person shall have previously satisfied such of the following requirements as would relate to the field of study in which he/she proposes to qualify for the degree. Preference will however be given to graduates with classes.

Programme of Study
The programme of study for the M.Sc. Degree will comprise course work and where necessary, a Directed Study or Project undertaken by the student to carry out an independent investigation in a selected field under the supervision of a teacher with the approval of the appropriate Board of Study. Every student must submit three bound copies of a report based upon independent investigation carried out by him/her in the Directed Study or Project.
Course Requirement
Subject to Section 1.31, a student shall with the approval of the appropriate Board of Study offer for the M.Sc. degree such number of prescribed courses of study as would enable him/her to make up the specified credit requirements.
The minimum credit requirement for the M.Sc. degree shall be forty-five (45) units of course work.
Eligibility for Degree
In order to be eligible for the award of the M.Sc. degree, a student shall have attained the Satisfactory "S" grade at a Comprehensive Examination after having successfully completed the examinations in the courses of study offered by him/her.
Completion of Programme
The minimum period of registration for the M.Sc. degree as a full time student shall be three terms, but the actual time taken by a particular student to complete the prescribed requirements will depend upon his/her application to the programme of study.
Every student shall have duly completed all the requirements prescribed for the M.Sc. degree within six terms of his/her initial registration. If he/she fails to obtain the degree within this period, he/she shall be required to apply for re-admission to the programme of study.
Transfer of Degree Programme
A student who has been registered for a full-time M.Sc.degree programme may at his/her request and upon the recommendation of the appropriate Board of Study be permitted by the Director of the Institute to transfer registration to a M.Phil. degree programme.

THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY
(By Course work and Research)
The M.Phil. degree shall be awarded to a person who has successfully completed a programme of study of at least six terms duration as a full time student.
Admission Requirements
The requirements for admission to the programme of study prescribed for the M.Phil. degree will be the same as those to be satisfied for admission to the M.Sc. degree programme.
Programme of Study
The programme of study for the M.Phil. degree will consist of course work and research.
Course Requirements
The minimum credit requirement for the M.Phil. degree shall be thirty five (35) units of course work.
Subject to Section 1.31, a student shall with the approval of the appropriate Board of Study offer for the M.Phil. degree such number of prescribed courses of study as would enable him/her to make up the specified credit requirement.
Research Requirements
Every student must submit in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the M.Phil. degree, a thesis based upon independent research conducted by him/her on a specific subject falling within his/her field of study. The subject together with the budget where necessary, shall be proposed by the student at the end of the second term of the year of admission or sooner and approved by the appropriate Board of Study on the recommendation of the Supervisory Committee.
In the total programme of study for the M.Phil. degree, a student shall have devoted to the research programme the time equivalent of at least three terms. In order to avoid undue prolongation of the period required to obtain the degree, the student must identify the subject of research at the end of the 2nd term of the course programme or sooner.
Progress Report
Every student engaged in the research component of any degree programme will be required to submit a progress report at least twice per year on the approved form of the institute.
Eligibility to Submit Thesis
In order to be eligible to submit the thesis for the M.Phil. degree, a student shall have attained the `S' (Satisfactory) grade at a Comprehensive Examination after having successfully completed the courses of study.
Completion of Programme
The minimum period of registration for the M.Phil. degree as a full time student shall be six terms, but the actual time taken by a particular student to complete the prescribed requirements will depend upon his/her application to the programme of study.
Every student shall have duly completed all requirements prescribed for the M.Phil. degree within nine terms of his initial registration. If he/she fails to obtain the degree within this period, he/she shall be required to apply for readmission to the programme of study. Readmission is at the discretion of the Board of Study.
Transfer of Degree Programme
Students are required to decide whether or not they should transfer to M.Sc. by the end of the second term and should complete the programme within the maximum period stipulated for the completion of the programme. Those who fail to complete within the maximum period are required to get themselves readmitted.
A student who has been registered for a full-time M.Phil. degree programme for not less than five terms and who has obtained a GPA of not less than 3.5 and has shown excellent progress in his/her research, may at his/her request and upon the recommendation of the Supervisory Committee and the appropriate Board of Study, be permitted by the Director of the institute to transfer the registration to a full-time Ph.D. degree programme.
Eligibility for Degree
In order to be eligible for the award of the M.Phil.degree, a student shall have attained the 'S' (Satisfactory) grade in the Thesis Defence Examination after having successfully completed the Comprehensive Examination.
THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY
(By Course Work and Research)
The Ph.D. degree will be awarded to a person who has successfully completed a programme of study of at least nine terms duration if he/she has previously obtained the M.Sc. or equivalent degree, or of at least six terms duration if he/she had been transferred from the M.Phil. degree programme, as the case may be. In any case, he/she shall have been a full-time student for not less than three terms.
Admission Requirements
In order to be eligible for admission to the programme of study prescribed for the Ph.D. degree a student shall have previously obtained the M.Sc. degree or the M.Phil. degree of the Institute or an equivalent Master's Degree of a recognised University or other Institute of higher learning, or shall have been transferred from the M.Phil. degree programme.
Programme of Study
The programme of study for the Ph.D. degree will consist of course work and research.
Course Requirements
The minimum credit requirement for the Ph.D. degree shall be forty five (45) units of course work.
Provided that part of the credits obtained in respect of the programme of study for the Masters Degree may with the approval of the appropriate Board of Study be transferred to the Ph.D. degree programme.
Subject to Section 1.33 and the proviso to Section 2.3.4, a student may with the approval of the appropriate Board of Study offer for the Ph.D. degree such number of prescribed courses of study as would enable him/her to make up the specified credit requirements.

In order to be eligible for the award of the Ph.D. degree, a student shall have attained the "S" (Satisfactory) Grade in the Thesis Defence Examination after having successfully completed the Comprehensive Examination.

Admission requirement
In order to be eligible for admission to the programme of study, a person shall have the following requirements.
i. A postgraduate degree from a recognised university as mandatory requirements for admission.
ii. Preferences to be given to these students holding first or second class at the first degree from a recognised university.
iii. Proven research ability and experience after graduation will also be considered.
All candidates seeking admission to M.Phil., Ph.D. research degrees will be given provisional registration in the first instance and transfer the registration to the degree sought based on evaluation of progress at the end of two terms by a committee appointed for this purpose by the respective Board of Study.
The candidates may be prescribed to follow courses as may be required to strengthen the capacity for undertaking research at the time of admission or during the first year by the Board of Study on the recommendation of the supervisory committee.
Duration
Minimum duration for M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees are 2 years and 3 years respectively, on full time basis.
Funding
All research projects leading to M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees should be supported by funds, either Institutional or personal, to conduct the project to a satisfactory completion. In the case of research projects funded by institutions, a research proposal and a budget should be provided, approved by the Head of the Institute. The candidates sponsored by Institutions should provide funds to cover i) monthly stipend/salary of the candidate ii) Research Expenditure and iii) all prescribed fees relevant to the programme as stipulated in the Prospectus.
ADMISSION OF PART-TIME STUDENTS FOR M.Sc.,
M.Phil., and Ph.D. DEGREE PROGRAMMES
A part-time student shall be a person who having satisfied the appropriate admission requirements had been admitted and registered as such by the Institute in order to follow a M.Sc. or M.Phil. or Ph.D. degree programme.
Eligibility for Admission
In order to be eligible for admission as a part-time student, a person must have previously satisfied all admission requirements specified for a M.Sc.or M.Phil. or Ph.D degree as in the case of a Regular full-time student.
Duration of Programme
(a) The M.Sc. degree will be awarded to a part-time student who has successfully completed a programme of study of at least five terms duration as a part-time student.
(b) The M.Phil. degree will be awarded to a part-time student who has successfully completed a programme of study of at least nine terms duration as a part-time student.
(c) The Ph.D. degree will be awarded to a part-time student who has successfully completed a programme of study of at least nine terms duration if he/she has previously obtained a M.Sc. or M.Phil. or an equivalent degree.
(d) Every student shall have duly completed all the requirements prescribed for the Ph.D. degree as a full-time student within 15 terms if he/she had previously obtained a M.Sc. or an equivalent degree or within 18 terms if he/she had previously obtained a M.Phil. or an equivalent degree.
Transfer of Degree Programme
(a) A student who has been registered for a part-time M.Sc. degree programme may at his/her request and upon the recommendation of the appropriate Board of Study be permitted by the Director of the institute to transfer the registration to a part-time M.Phil. degree programme.
(b) A student who has been registered for a part-time M.Phil. degree programme for not less than three terms with a minimum of 25 credits and has obtained a GPA of not less than 3.5 and has shown excellent progress in his/her research, may at his/her request and upon the recommendation of his/her Supervisory Committee and the appropriate Board of Study, be permitted by the Director of the institute to transfer registration to a part-time Ph.D. degree programme.
Research Requirement
Every part-time student registering for a M.Phil/Ph.D degree programme must submit in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the appropriate degree, a thesis based upon independent research conducted by him/her on a specific subject falling within the Board of Study. The subject of research shall be proposed by the student and approved by the appropriate Board of Study on the recommendation of the Supervisory Committee.
In the total programme of study for the M.Phil. degree a part-time student shall devote to the research programme the time equivalent to at least six terms. A part-time student may identify the subject of research as early as the first term of registration and conduct research work simultaneously with the course work. In the total programme of study for the Ph.D. degree a part-time student shall have devoted the major period of study to the research programme.
Research Evaluation
A part-time student who is registered for a M.Phil./Ph.D. degree programme and has commenced research work must submit at the end of each term a progress report to the Supervisory Committee. The Supervisory Committee will review the research work and report to the appropriate Board of Study the progress of the student. The research work will be evaluated in terms of either (S) Satisfactory or (U) Unsatisfactory grade.
A part-time student who had obtained (U) grade for the research work during two consecutive terms may be required by the Board of Study to withdraw from the programme of study.
Transfer of Student Status
A part-time student may at his/her request and upon the recommendation of the Board of Study be permitted by the Director to transfer the registration to a full-time regular student status.
All other regulations pertaining to the programme of study of full-time students shall apply mutatis mutandis to part-time students.
