The Applied Science Programme of the Faculty of Science at the University of Peradeniya was established in 2005 to meet the demand of the industrial sector of lacking graduates with suitable knowledge in industrial activities. Thus, the goal of the programme is to produce a model science graduate to be competent to work in the industrial sector.
This is a four-year undergradaute degree programme, and students for the programme are selected after completion of the general degree requirements. Many courses in the programme are multidisciplinary in nature, which includes Industrial management, Industry & the environment, Data integrity & management, Industrial microbiology, Industrial applications laboratory, Industrial mathematics, Geographical information systems and Research methodology & scientific writing. Additionally, students get the opportunity to explore local industries through industrial visits arranged during the course of study. As such, students of the programme are expected to obtain a sound knowledge of interdisciplinary fields related in industrial issues, skills on communication, management, presentation and computer literacy; personal development such as leadership, social interactions, group activities, etc.
The first batch of students consisted of 22 students, and there has been a growing steadily after the first batch. The program is operated in two 10-week terms followed by a four-month industrial placement component. The lecture and the laboratory components of the programme are conducted by staff members of all departments of the Faculty of Science, and visiting staff members from other faculties, such as Engineering, and experts from the industrial sector.
The Applied Science Programme of the University of Pradeniya is a unique programme in the country consisting of two undergraduate components: Three-year component of basic sciences, and the fourth year on industrial aspects followed by industrial placement. Consequently, students are able to apply basic sciences to develop skills to be used in industry. |
