The Faculty of Science, University of Peradeniya is the premier Faculty of Science in Sri Lanka founded in 1942 and shifted to the present location at the University of Peradeniya in 1961. The Faculty of Science is one of the eight Faculties of the University of Peradeniya, the most prestigious university in Sri Lanka located in the foothills of the Hantana mountain range with a salubrious climate and with all the amenities necessary for a conducive learning environment.
The Faculty consists of eight academic Departments and annually admits about 500 students. The Faculty conducts four year B.Sc. Special Degree Programme s in Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Mathematics, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Physics, Statistics and Zoology, and four year B.Sc. Degree programmes in Statistics and Operations Research and Computation and Management (offered jointly with the Faculty of Arts). Also, the Faculty offers a three year B.Sc. (General) Degree Programme with an option of pursuing a four year B.Sc. Degree in Applied Sciences in which the students spend an additional year covering industry-related courses and an industrial placement. All the courses in the Faculty are conducted under semester-based course unit system that has widened the scope and flexibility of course combinations. Undergraduates are also trained in Information Communication Technology, Laboratory and Field Techniques, critical thinking, problem solving, team work, leadership skills, and effective oral and written communication skills. The Faculty, while offering courses which provide a solid foundation in Sciences and Mathematics, also offers courses in latest advances in the areas of Nanotechnology, Biotechnology, Biodiversity Conservation, Geographic Information Systems, Ecotourism, Environmental Science, Management and Economics etc. Our Degree Programmes provide excellent choices for challenging carrier opportunities, nationally and internationally, that open the door to the world of Science. In addition to serving various sectors in the country, a significant number of our graduates are enrolled in M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. Degree Programmes in high ranking universities in the world and excel in their performance.
The Faculty of Science has a thriving research community who has excelled in their performance and won numerous national and international awards and highly competitive research grants. The laboratories are well equipped with state of the art scientific equipment including atomic force microscope, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, scanning tunnelling microscope, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, polarizing microscope, and a national centre to repair equipment. Thirty four of our Faculty members received Presidential Awards in 2010 in recognition of their research publications. We publish over one hundred research publications annually in internationally recognized professional Journals and some of these findings have received several patents. Currently, the Faculty publishes two Scientific Journals to disseminate the scientific discoveries within Sri Lanka and with the world at large. The Department of Geology (only such Department in Sri Lanka) significantly contributes to the management of natural disasters in Sri Lanka and provides training in GIS and Remote Sensing to students.
Dissemination of scientific knowledge through publishing text books and conducting Science Camps for the benefit of rural school children and training programmes for secondary school teachers are among the main activities of the Science Education Unit of the Faculty. The Science Industry Interaction Cell of the Faculty has the primary focus on promoting a vibrant relationship with the industrial sector and commercialising the research findings.
