Computer Unit |
Following a policy decision of the University Grants Commission to promote the use of computers in higher education, a computer unit in the Faculty of Science was established in June 1984.
This Unit is opened to all students, those who follow computer Science as a subject and also those who don’t. They use this Unit to do their additional practical works such as assigned practical, type setting of their project reports, tutorials etc.,
All the students’ societies use this Unit to prepare their handouts, souvenirs etc. Unit provides Laser Printouts and Dot-matrix Printouts for the students. All temporary academic staff members, non-academic staff members and PGIS students use this unit for their day-to-day work. From August 2001, students are given the Internet Access at this Unit using the University Network.
Further, the Unit assists all the academic and non-academic staff when they encounter problems in their day-to-day work, using computers. The Computer Unit is planning to purchase more equipment to give better facilities to the students. |
Printing Unit |
Monographs and books written by the Faculty members are printed and published by the Printing and Publication Unit. Two international journals – Ceylon Journal of Science (Biological Science) and Ceylon Journal of Science (Physical Sciences) are also published by this Unit. |
Industry Interaction Unit |
The Analytical Services Laboratory of the Department of Chemistry provides analytical services to industries in the private and public sector, particularly in the areas of raw materials, products and processes and in the control of environmental pollution. Other departments also secure consultancies link programmers & advisory services to industry on an ad hoc basis. It is proposed to set up a Science Industry Interaction Unit to formalise such activities. |
