Workshop on “Way to a Successful Career”

The Staff Development Centre conducted a workshop on “Way to a Successful Career” for newly recruited labourers of the University. The workshop was targeted to improve knowledge, skills, and attitudes of them to develop their career in a good way.

The workshop was held on 19th February, 2015 at the Upper Hantana Training Centre from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. Thirty newly recruited persons from labourer category participated at the workshop. Prof. Atula Senaratne/Vice Chancellor, Prof. Shantha Hennayake/Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Prof. Sarath Abayakoon/Former Vice Chancellor of University of Peradeniya participated as invited guests of the Inauguration. Prof. Sarath Abayakoon/Former Vice Chancellor of the University, Dr. W.D. Chandrasena/Acting Director-SDC, Mr. Saman Rajapaksha/Deputy Registrar/Academic Establishments Branch, and Dr. Chalinda Beneragama/Former Director of the SDC served as resource persons of the workshop. Participants have highly appreciated and evaluated the knowledge and experience gained through the workshop on developing their career and personal life as members of the University community.

Opening Ceremony of the New Building

The new building of the Staff Development Centre (SDC) was opend by Prof. Atula Senaratne the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya on 09th May, 2015 at 8.30 a.m. with the participation of the academic, administrative, and non academic staff members of the University. The speakers of the opening ceremony were Dr. W.D. Chandrasena, the Acting Director of the SDC; Prof. Deepthi Bandara, the founder Director of the SDC; Prof. Kapila Goonesekera, a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya; Prof. Shantha Hennayake, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya; and Prof. Athula Senaratne, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya.

The location of the new building is the first building on the left side of Marcus Fernando Hall. The new building features are 120 seating capacity auditorium, an office room, a room for the Director of the SDC, and an instrument room. The SDC was established in March, 1999 at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya and the Office of the SDC was shifted to the Senate House in 2009. The support given by the different Faculties of the University to hold the workshops and training programmes during the last sixteen years is greatly appreciated. Thus, It’s a great pleasure to have a permanent place for the office and also an auditorium to conduct the SDC activities in the future.

Induction Programme for Academic Staff Members

The first induction programme for newly recruited academic staff members in this year was commenced on 18th of March, 2015 and conducted three segments during the following periods.

  • 01st Segment - 18th to 20th March and 23rd to 27th March, 2015
  • 02nd Segment – 06th to 09th April and 21st to 24th April, 2015
  • 03rd Segment – 11th to 15th May and 25th to 29th May, 2015

Twenty five academic staff members participated in the programme. Twenty three staff members from University of Peradeniya and two members from Sabaragamuwa University and University of Ruhuna had been selected for the program from forty eight applicants. The duration of 150 hours of programme covered 14 modules. According to the course objectives, the sessions of the programme consist of almost all disciplines of an academic profession. The excellent resource persons facilitated the programme. According to the voice of the participants the programme is highly useful and successful. The evaluation of the programme by the participants is at a very high level. Participants enjoyed the programme while they learnt important aspects that promote their academic career.

All participants awarded certificates for successful completion of the programme and the awarding ceremony was held on 29th May, 2015 at the Senate Room of the University of Peradeniya.

Workshop on “Young Scientists: Shaping a Successful Research Career”

The above workshop was organized by the Staff Development Centre in Collaboration with the National Science and Technology Commission (NASTEC), Sri Lanka. The workshop was held on 28th April, 2015 at the Auditorium of the Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya. Eighty young academic staff members participated in the workshop. Dr. Nanda Gunawardena, Prof. Missaka P.B. Wijayagunawardena and a panel of twelve other resource persons conducted the workshop.

Workshop on “Me and My Job” An Induction Program for Temporary Academic Staff of Faculty of Agriculture

The Staff Development Centre (SDC) conducted a workshop on “Me and My Job” as an Induction program for temporary academic staff of the Faculty of Agriculture on 25th February, 2014 at the SRICANSOL Centre of Department of Soil Science, Faculty of Agriculture. Forty nine temporary academic staff members participated in the workshop. Prof. K. Samarasinghe, Prof. U.R. Sangakkara, Prof. Deepthi Bandara, Dr. L. Galagedara, Mr. S.B. Athauda served as resource persons.

Workshop on “Time Management”

The Staff Development Centre (SDC) of University of Peradeniya has organized a workshop on “Time Management” for the administrative staff of the University of Peradeniya on 21st March, 2014 from 9.30 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. at the Upper Hantana Training Centre. Eighteen administrative staff officers participated in the workshop. Dr. Jayalath Edirisinghe, Director/Centre for Distance and Continuing Education served as the resource person.

Workshop on “Ignite Passion”

The Staff Development Centre (SDC) conducted a personality development workshop on “Ignite Passion” for stenographers of the University on 27th June, 2014 from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. at the Senate Room of the University. Forty five stenographers of the University participated in the workshop. Ms. Sunethra Jayaratne Nugawela, Executive Director, Academy for Administrative Professionals served as resource person.

Workshop on “ Feel the pulse of the Others”

The Staff Development Centre (SDC) conducted a workshop on “Feel the Pulse of the Others” to improve effective communication skills for nursing staff of the University on 19th July, 2014 from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. at the Faculty of Dental Sciences . Thirty four nurses from Health Centre and Faculty of Dental Sciences participated in the workshop. Dr. Ruwan Jayasinghe, Faculty of Dental Sciences, Prof. Deepthi C. Bandara, Faculty of Agriculture and Dr. Chalinda Beneragama, Director/Staff Development Centre served as resource persons.

Workshop on “Personality Development” for Drivers in the University

The Staff Development Centre (SDC) conducted a workshop on “Personality Development” for drivers of the University on 20th July, 2014 from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. at the Gal Bangalawa University Guest House from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. Twenty six drivers of the University participated in the workshop. Dr. Chalinda Beneragama, Director/Staff Development Centre and Mr. Nishanha Jayasooriya, Works engineer/Works Department served as resource persons.

Three-day workshop on “Developing Curricula to Match Current trends in Higher Education” (AC)

The Staff Development Centre (SDC) conducted a three-day workshop on “Developing Curricula to Match Current trends in Higher Education” on 17th 18th and 26th November, 2014 from 9.00 a.m. to 3.15 p.m. at the Post Graduate Institute of Agriculture. Twenty six academic staff members from faculties of Agriculture, Allied Health, Arts, Engineering, Medicine, Science participated in the program. Prof. Deepthi Bandara served as resource person.

Ninth Induction Program for Academic Staff

The 02nd Induction program for Academic Staff for the year 2014 was started on 23rd September, 2014 and completed the three segments during the following days.

  • 1st segment – September 23rd to 26th and 30th September to 03rd October, 2014
  • 2nd segment - October 14th to 17th and 20th to 24th October, 2014
  • 3rd segment – October 28th to 31st and 03rd and 04th November, 2014

24 participants from Universities of Peradeniya and Uwa Wellassa participated in the program and successfully completed the program.

Workshop on Administrative Procedures and Financial Regulations in the University”

Staff Development Centre(SDC) of University of Peradeniya has organized a workshop on “Administrative procedures and Financial Regulations in the University” for Academic Staff of Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya on 25th July, 2013 from 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. at the board room of the Faculty of Medicine. Heads of the Departments and other interested, thirty (30) academic staff members participated in the workshop. Prof. Anura Wickremasinghe and Mr. D.D. Upananda served as the resource persons.

Workshop on “Effective Communication and Presentation Skills”

A one-day workshop on “Effective Communication Skills and Presentation Skills” was held on 18th and 19th April, 2013 at the Upper Hantana Training Centre from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. The same workshop was held for two groups of administrative staff and twenty three members participated at the both workshops. Dr. Chalinda Beneragama (Director/SDC ) and Dr. Jayalath Edirisinghe (Director/CDCE) served as the resource persons for the workshop.

Workshop on “My Job and I” – An Induction Program for Non Academic Staff

A two-day workshop on “My Job and I” – An Induction Program was conducted for newly recruited non academic staff members of the clerical and allied grades to make them aware about the University, their duties and responsibilities, and to motivate them. The workshop was held on 03rd and 05th July, 2013 at the Upper Hantana Training Centre, from 9.30 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. Twenty eight (28) newly recruited non academic staff members participated for the workshop. Dr. Chalinda Beneragama (Director/SDC), Dr. B.M.K. Perera (Director/Career Guidance Unit) Prof. S.B.S. Abayakoon (Former Vice-Chancellor), Ms. Kosambika Samaradekara (Senior Personal Secretary to the VC), and Ms. C.M.N. Ranawana (Senior Assistant Registrar) served as the resource persons for the workshop.

Workshop on “Public Accountability and Management of Departmental Inventory”

Workshop on “Public Accountability and Management of Departmental Inventory was held on 04th and 05th December, 2013 at the Senate Room. Deans of faculties, Heads of Academic Departments and Administrative Departments, Service Units, Libraries, Halls of residences and the persons who are handling the departmental inventories were invited for the workshop. Altogether 231 participants attended for the two workshops. Mr. S.C. Mayadunne (Former auditor general) and Mr. N.G.K.K. Seneviratne (Retired Chief Accountant) served as the resource persons.

Workshop on “Preparation of Financial Statements”

The SDC in collaboration with the Department of Financial Administration conducted a workshop on “Preparation of Financial Statements” on 18th December 2013 from 9.00 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. at the Senate Room. Mr. M.D. Gantune (Bursar/University of Peradeniya) and Mr. D.D. Upananda (Deputy Bursar) served as resource person. Ninety seven (97) academic and non academic staff members, including Deans, Heads of Departments, SARs ARs, SABs, Abs and senior staff members (non Academic) participated at the workshop.

ICT Skill Development training Program for Non Academic Staff

The SDC in collaboration with the IT Centre has started a 64-hrs training program on Basic Computer Skills and Applications for Non Academic Staff (clerical, technical & allied grades) of the University. The 1st program has been conducted each Saturdays from 23rd November, 2013 to 11th January, 2014 on the following days.

  • 23rd and 30th November, 2013
  • 07th, 14th,21st, 28th December, 2013
  • 04th and 11th January, 2014

Sixth Induction Program for Academic Staff

Sixth Induction program for Academic Staff for year 2013 was started on 12th February, 2013 and completed the three segments during the following days.

  • 1st segment – February 12th to 15th and 18th to 22nd
  • 2nd segment - March 11th to 15th and 18th to 22nd
  • 3rd segment – April 18th & 19th, 22nd to 26th and 29th

Twenty five participants from the Universities of Peradeniya, Rajarata and Buddha Shravaka Bikku, participated in the program. The program hours and contents are the same as the program conducted in year 2013.

25 participants awarded certificated for successfully completed the program at the awarding ceremony which was hold on 29th April, 2013 at the Senate Room of the University. The acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. K. Samarasinghe awarded certificates for the participants.

Seventh Induction Program for Academic Staff -2013 (02nd Program)

The 02nd Induction Program for the year 2013 was started on 13th August, 2013 and completed the three segments during the following day.

  • 1st segment – August 13th to 16 and 19th to 23rd
  • 2nd segment – September 09th to 13th and 16th to 20th
  • 3rd segment – October 14th, 15th and 21st to 25th

Twenty four (24) participants from Universities of Peradeniya, Buddha Shravak Bikku and South Eastern participated in the program and successfully completed the program.

Workshop on “Management of Departmental Inventory”

Staff Development Centre (SDC) of University of Peradeniya conducted a workshop on “Management of Departmental Inventory” on 9th and 10th January 2012 at the Senate Room. The target group was all deans, heads of departments, AR’s and the persons who are handling the departmental inventories at University of Peradeniya. Altogether 192 participants attended the workshop. Mr.S.C. Mayadunne (Former auditor general) and Mr. N.G.K.K. Seneviratne (Retired Chief Accountant – Grade 1) served as the resource persons. Dr. Chalinda Beneragama (Director/SDC) coordinated the event.

Workshop on “Developing Research Capacity of the University Staff”

Staff Development Centre (SDC) of University of Peradeniya has organized and conducted a workshop on “Developing Research Capacity of the University Staff” on 2nd February 2012 at the Senate room. The target group was all young academics of University of Peradeniya. Altogether 130 participants attended the workshop. Professor David Galloway (Emeritus Professor, Durham University, UK) served as the resource person. Dr. Chalinda Beneragama (Director/SDC) coordinated the event.

Workshop on “Being a member of a Team for Betterment”

Staff Development Centre (SDC) of University of Peradeniya has organized a workshop on the request made by the Assistant Registrar, Non Academic Establishment for the persons who are in labourer grades of the Works Division, Landscape Division and the Health services in order to develop a positive attitudes, improve the work performance and to enhance the team work among them. The workshop was held on 22nd November, 2012, at the Gal Bangalawa Guest House. 200 persons in labourer grades were participated in the workshop. Dr. Chalinda Beneragama (Director/SDC) served as the resource person.

Workshop on “Secrets of Workplace Success”

Staff Development Centre (SDC) of University of Peradeniya has organized a one-day workshop on “Secrets of workplace success” for all persons who are in the laborer category of the University to improve their knowledge, skills and attitudes. The total number of persons in this category was about 500, and conducted the same workshop as group-vise on the following days from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.)

  • 29th and 30th November, 2012
  • 06th,18th,20th December, 2012
  • 03rd ,04th ,08th,10th and 11th January, 2013

The workshop was held at the Upper Hantana Training Centre. Dr. Chalinda Beneragama (Director/SDC ) and Dr. B.M.K. Perera (Director/Career Guidance Unit) served as the resource persons for the above 10 workshops.

Fifth Induction Program for Academic Staff

The SDC has conducted 150 hrs duration Induction Program for probationary academic staff in 2012. Twenty four staff members form Universities of Peradeniya, Rajarata, Moratuwa and Buddha Shrawaka Bikku University participated in the program. The program stated on 14th February 2012 and completed as three segments during the following dates.

  • 1st segment – February 14th to 17th and February 21st to 24th
  • 2nd segment - March 19th to 23rd and March 26th to 30th
  • 3rd segment – April 17th to 20th and April 23rd to 24th

The program included face-to-face sessions and assignments. All the modules of the program were conducted in English. Twenty four resource persons with expertise in the different modules contributed to the program. All resource persons and sessions were evaluated by the participants. Each participant had the opportunity to teach theory and practical lessons to the peer group and received constructive criticism. All the participants of the program obtained pass grade for the both theory and practical lessons.

The awards ceremony was held on 24th April 2012 at the Senate Room of the University of Peradeniya. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, Prof. S.B.S. Abeykoon awarded the certificates to all the participants (24) who had successfully completed the program.
