The Campus Network of the University of Peradeniya is the largest optical fiber LAN in the country. It was developed from 1999 to 2001 with the support of the Swedish International Development Co-opertaion Agency (Sida).

The University of Peradeniya network is also the most advanced university network in the country, in terms of the services offered to the university community. Over 10 dedicated servers are employed to provide a wide range of services provided include electronic mail, domain name service (DNS), web proxy, File Transfer, LDAP directory, and VoIP services. All active devices in the network are monitored by a dedicated server, which automatically notifies the network operations center (NOC) staff in case of critical network resources becoming unavailable.

All the services provided to the users use the campus LDAP directory service whenever possible. The user therefore has only to remember one account information, and can use the same account for accessing all the networking services available to him/her. The services that can be accessed using the campus account include electronic mail, Voice Over IP (VoIP) services, dial-up connections to the campus network, update of personal profile and account informations, and view telephone usage reports.

Access of the campus network resources from residences and parts of the campus currently not covered by the network can be made through dial-up access. The dial-in router can provide up-to 30 simultaneous connections of speeds up-to 56kbps.

The network is constantly monitored by a dedicated server which automatically disables any machines in the network that are determined as unhealthy. This prevents the spread of viruses, worms etc. in the network and saves the time of the various system administrators.

The campus network is developed and maintained by the Internet and Communication Services Unit (ICSU), located in the Faculty of Engineering. The staff of the ICSU currently includes a director (part-time) and two network engineers (full-time).
