An exhibition on Women’s Histories of Sex Work: Narratives of Conflict, Courage and Survival was held at the New Library Building of the University of Peradeniya on 14th, 15th, and 16th October 2024 aimed at shedding light on the complexities and realities of the lives of sex workers.

Co-sponsored by Grassrooted Trust and Sex Workers and Allies of South Asia, and the Sexual or Gender-Based Violence and Harassment Prevention Committee of the University of Peradeniya, it challenged the visitors to rethink their biases and consider the broader societal issues at play. Through powerful photographs, personal narratives, and interactive documentaries, the exhibition offered a platform for sex workers to share their stories and advocate for their rights with the general public.

With more than 300 visitors, the event successfully challenged many preconceived notions and societal stigma surrounding sex work. The event included an opening panel discussion and a workshop on “Using Art Forms for Documenting Oral Histories” for students in addition to the exhibition. The interactive documentaries were another highlight, making the viewing experience engaging and thought-provoking. The visitors appreciated how the exhibition created a platform for open discussions about important topics such as consent, autonomy, and social justice.

The panel discussion, which included academics, non-academics, and students, offered an excellent opportunity to delve deeper into these topics and engage in critical conversations. It was refreshing to see diverse perspectives on advocating for the rights of sex workers. The event was an opportunity also to educate the University community about the UOP Policy on Sexual or Gender-Based Violence and Harassment Prevention through handing out an easy-to-read Handbook on the same.
