Capacity Building Program on Biodiversity

Organized by Center for Environmental Sustainability, University of Peradeniya in collaboration with the Amaya Resorts & Spas

Kandy, Sri Lanka – On February 09, 2025, the Center for Environmental Sustainability (CES) at the University of Peradeniya, in collaboration with Amaya Resorts and Spas, organized an enriching biodiversity excursion and capacity-building session at Amaya Hills, Kandy. This event targeted undergraduates of the University of Peradeniya and the staff of Amaya Hills, promoting a deeper understanding of biodiversity conservation and eco-tourism.

The day commenced at 6:30 am with a briefing by Dr. Nalin Suranjith, Acting Director of CES. Approximately 30 undergraduate students from the faculties of science and agriculture, along with 10 staff members from Amaya Hills, participated. The weather was ideal, with a temperature of 20°C, moderate humidity, and a clear sky.

Participants embarked on a guided biodiversity tour along a trail in Hantana Mountain, where they were assisted by experts in identifying various species of birds, plants, and animals. Bird-watching was a highlight, with enthusiasts observing the region’s diverse avian life under the guidance of Dr. Chaminda Wijesundara, Head of the Department of Environmental and Industrial Sciences, University of Peradeniya, and a leading bird expert in the country. Under his guidance, students had the opportunity to identify birds through direct observation, bird calls and field guides  and learn about their behaviors, habitats, and ecological significance.

Following the tour, attendees engaged in a series of informative lectures. Dr. Chaminda Wijesundara presented an engaging talk on Birds of Sri Lanka, highlighting their diversity, conservation status, and the importance of habitat preservation. Dr. Gajaba Ellepola from the Department of Zoology discussed amphibians of Sri Lanka, their unique adaptations, and distribution. Mr. Kumudu Wijesooriya, also from the Department of Zoology, led a session on venomous reptiles of Sri Lanka, covering their behavior, distribution, and identification.

The event provided a unique opportunity for participants to connect with nature and expand their knowledge of Sri Lanka’s rich wildlife. CES expresses gratitude to Mr. Gayan Samarakoon, Head of Sustainability at Amaya Resorts & Spas, and Mr. Dayan Ganegoda, General Manager of Amaya Hills – Kandy, for hosting the program and to the entire staff of Amaya Hills for their efforts in making the excursion a success.
