A twelve member delegation from the Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg (TUBAF), Germany, led by Prof. Dr. Carsten Drebenstedt, Professor in Surface Mining, visited the Vice Chancellor Professor Terrence Madhujith on 30 th July, 2025. This international academic engagement was hosted by the Department of Geology, University of Peradeniya.

This visit was part of a collaborative initiative between TUBAF, and the University of Peradeniya focused on strengthening ties in geological sciences, mining engineering, and sustainable resource development. The visit aimed to foster long-term academic collaboration, joint research opportunities, initiating an MOU and international exposure for the students and staff. The team’s visit to the University of Peradeniya also included meetings with faculty, facility visits, a public lecture by Prof. Drebenstedt (organized in
collaboration with the Geological Society of Sri Lanka), and an interactive session with the undergraduate students.

The meeting at the Vice Chancellor’s Office was also attended by Prof. Sanath Rajapakse, Dean, Faculty of Science, Prof. Nanda Balasooriya, Director-PGIS, Prof. Sanjeewa Malaviarachchi, Director-International Relations and Head of the Department of Geology,
Dr. Bhathiya Athurupana, Coordinator of the visit and academic staff of the Department of Geology, Faculty of Science.
