Department of Tamil Students Visit South India for a Workshop

A workshop jointly organized by the Department of Tamil Studies in Foreign Countries, Tamil University, India, and the Department of Tamil, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, was held in the last semester of 2024 at Tamil University, Thanjavur.

Titled “Multifaceted Dimensions of Tamilology,” the workshop catered to students from both universities. Assistant lecturers and third-year students from Peradeniya, led by Professor S. Pirashanthan, participated.

A day before the workshop, the team toured historic sites from Chennai to Thanjavur, including Mamallapuram Kattazhi Temple, Pancharatha Malaiththazhir Temple, and the open-air temple of Arjuna’s Penance. In Pondicherry, they visited Sri Manakula Vinayagar Temple, Bharatiyar’s House, Puducherry Museum, and other cultural landmarks before concluding at Chidambaram Natarajar Temple. Professors Pirashanthan and M.M. Jayaseelan provided explanations.

The workshop opened at Tamil University, with Professors T. Kurinjiventhan and Pirashanthan highlighting its importance. Lectures were delivered by eminent scholars, including Dr. Ko. Kovaimani, Dr. M. Muthuravelu, Dr. M. Archunan, Dr. S. Thirugnanasambandham, Dr. V. Selvakumar, Dr. K. Mohankanthi, Dr. Manimaran, Dr. Natarasapillai, and Professor Dr. M. Thiagarajan.

Students also visited key sites in Thanjavur, including Tanjore Periyakovil, Saraswati Mahal Library, Saraboji King’s Palace, and Tamil University’s Sculpture Gallery and Library.

The closing ceremony, held at the University Library Hall, was presided over by Vice-Chancellor Professor V. Thiruvalluvan. Mrs. Punitha Ganesan, Managing Director of Thanjavur Bharat Education Group, delivered the welcome address, followed by reflections from Professor Pirashanthan. Vice-Chancellor Thiruvalluvan awarded certificates, and the event concluded with a Tamil music workshop by artist Kalaivalarmani N. Manikandan.

On Teachers’ Day in India, students attended a special Tamil teaching seminar at Poondi Pudupam College, where Professor Pirashanthan delivered the keynote speech. Students from Peradeniya and Pudupam College performed folk songs.

On the final day, students visited Trichy Srirangam Perumal Temple and explored Kamparamayana sites. They returned to Peradeniya enriched with new knowledge and experiences.
