An exhibition organized to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (Special Needy Students) which falls on to 3rd December by the Special Needs Resource Center (SNRC) of the University of Peradeniya was held on 28th November 2022 from 15:00 to 17:00 at the Senate Building premises.
The Motto for this year announced by United Nations Organization was,
“Transformative solutions for inclusive development the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world’”
The sole purpose of this exhibition was to educate the function of such children if such cases exist among the academic and non-academic staff of this University and also to give an understanding of how to negotiate with such persons who are living in their community. Presentations were made by visually handicapped alumina of the University on how to engage in studies with the help of the Brail System and the way of communication by those with hearing defects, at the exhibition which was held under the title of ‘Path to inclusive Education’.
Further, alumina members of the SNRC presented their literary creations such as poetry, paintings and dancing skills as well. A documentary film created by Sakuna Wikcramsinghe was also screened. This occasion was graced by Professor WM. Terrance Madhujith, Deputy Vice-chancellor, Dr. EMPCS. Ekanayake, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Ms. MG. Jayantha Dharmasiri, Acting Registrar, and Heads of the Departments of Academic and Non-academic staffs, and non-academic staff members. Addressing the meeting Deputy Vice-chancellor, Dean/Arts and the Coordinator of the SNRC, Professor Leena Seneheweera emphasized the importance of extending the service of this centre beyond the University to the whole society by producing researchers and conducting Teacher Training Programs etc.
The present Coordinator of the SNRC, Professor Leena Seneheweera while working as a lecturer of the Department of Aesthetics extends her voluntary service to function this centre in a productive manner. She stated that after the exhibition, many members of the academic and non-academic staff are keen to be educated about the manner they should work with their children in the future. Professor, Leena Seneheweera further stated that our task should be to encourage these children and create opportunities to enhance their skills instead of sympathizing and weeping over their condition.
