The First Aid Training Program for the Safety Officers of the University of Peradeniya was successfully held on December 4th, 2024, at the Circular Auditorium in the Department of Animal Science. A total of forty-two (42) Safety Officers participated in this essential program, which aimed to enhance their preparedness for responding to medical emergencies.
The training was conducted by Mr. Y.M.K.U. Bandara, Nursing Officer, and Mr. A.H.M.D.M.B. Abeyrathna from the University Health Center, under the guidance of the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. (Mrs.) H.M.C.L. Herath. The program covered a wide range of crucial topics, ensuring that the participants were equipped with the knowledge and skills to handle various emergency situations. These topics included Basic First Aid Principles, Basic Life Support, Fractures and Musculoskeletal Injuries, Medical Emergencies, Basic Trauma Care, and Emergency Preparedness and Response.
The program received valuable support from the General Services Division of the University, which provided both financial backing and personnel coordination. Additionally, mannequins for the hands-on demonstrations were generously supplied by the Department of Anesthesiology, Faculty of Medicine, and the Department of Nursing, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences.
This important initiative was coordinated by Mr. Nalaka Akurange, Safety Officer at the University of Peradeniya, under the guidance of several esteemed university officials. These included Professor Ranjith Pallegama, Deputy Vice Chancellor; Professor J.K. Vidanarachchi, Chairperson of the Safety Committee; and the Senior Assistant Registrar of the General Services Division.
