Inaugural National Sustainable Tourism Conference (NSTC 2024)

The inaugural National Sustainable Tourism Conference (NSTC 2024), a collaborative effort between the Department of Trade, Commerce & Tourism, Central Province, and the Department of Geography, University of Peradeniya, took place successfully on December 17, 2024, at the Department of Geography, University of Peradeniya. The event brought together a vibrant mix of academics, policymakers, industry leaders, and students to explore sustainable tourism practices under the theme, “Harmony of Culture, Heritage, and Nature: Towards Sustainable Tourism in Sri Lanka.”
The conference was co-chaired by Mrs. Sandamali Hewage, Director of the Department of Trade, Commerce & Tourism, Central Province, and Prof. T.W.M. Tilak Wijethunga Bandara, Head of the Department of Geography, University of Peradeniya.
NSTC 2024 featured insightful technical sessions spanning five critical themes:

  • Cultural Heritage Preservation and Tourism
  • Biodiversity Conservation and Ecotourism
  • Community Empowerment and Engagement
  • Sustainable Tourism Policy and Planning
  • Innovation and Technology in Tourism

A key highlight was an engaging panel discussion moderated by Prof. M.S.M. Aslam, which delved into the intricate relationships among culture, sociology, economics, governance, and tourism. The distinguished panelists, including Prof. H.M.D.R. Herath, Dr. Poornika Seelagama, Dr. Samanmala Dorabawila, and Mrs. Sandamali Hewage, shared diverse and thought-provoking perspectives on these interconnected areas.
This landmark event underscored the power of collaboration between academic institutions and government bodies in fostering impactful dialogue and actionable strategies for sustainable tourism development. NSTC 2024 has set a strong foundation for shaping the future of Sri Lanka’s tourism industry with a focus on preserving its rich cultural heritage, protecting biodiversity, and empowering communities.
