The Korean Embassy in Sri Lanka hosted it’s first-ever Korea Cultural Festival in Kandy at the Gymnasium of the University of Peradeniya on June 7th 2025, offering an immersive and vibrant celebration of Korean heritage. Blending the elegance of Korean culture with the scenic beauty of the university, the event attracted a large and enthusiastic crowd eager to experience the richness of Korean cuisine and entertainment.
A highlight of the event was the Taekwondo Tournament by the school students around Kandy who showcased the discipline and spirit of this iconic Korean sport. It was illuminated by live Korean traditional music performances that energized the audience. Participants also experienced authentic Korean flavours prepared by a Korean chef who introduced a variety of Korean dishes at live action food stations including Tteokbokki, the popular spicy rice cakes, along with a hospitality of Sri Lankan traditional foods.
H.E. Ambassador Miyon LEE graced the event as the Chief Guest, along with Professor Terrence Madhujith, Vice Chancellor, University of Peradeniya as the Guest of Honour. Professor Ranjith Pallegama, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, Professor Sanjeewa Malaviarachchi, Director-International Relations of the University of Peradeniya, Professor T. Sivananthawerl, Director-Physical Education of the University of Peradeniya also took part as special invitees. Mr. Mahesh Abeywickrama, Acting Public Relations Officer of the University of Peradeniya co-ordinated the overall event along with Ms. Avindi Vidanage of the Korean Embassy in Sri Lanka.
