The Department of Sociology at the University of Peradeniya, in collaboration with the Embassy of France to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, successfully held a two-day workshop on “Mixed, Multi-sited, and Multi-scalar Methods in Social Sciences” on August 22nd and 23rd, 2024, at the Faculty of Agriculture’s Animal Science Department. The event brought together 45 promising Sociology undergraduates and early-career researchers from 10 national universities across Sri Lanka.
Marking the first national-level workshop to connect public universities, this event laid the foundation for establishing a Young Sociologists’ Association in Sri Lanka. The workshop was led by esteemed international scholars, Dr. Marine Al Dahdah, a CNRS sociologist at the French Institute in Pondicherry, India, and Dr. Mathieu Ferry, Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (UVSQ), France. These sessions provided hands-on training in advanced research methodologies, enhancing the research skills of early-career scholars and promoting collaboration within the country.
Adding to the event’s significance, Ms. Olivia Bellemère, Cultural and Cooperation Counsellor at the Embassy of France, graced the occasion with her presence. The workshop also featured an insightful keynote address by Professor Kalinga Tudor Silva, Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Peradeniya.
The workshop was organized by Dr. Priyadarshani Premarathne with the support of the Head of the Department of Sociology, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya.
