Ceremony of Unveiling the Statue of Sir Ivor Jennings ‚Äď Founder Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya

The unveiling of the statue of Sir Ivor Jennings the Founder Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya was held on 6th December, 2017.  The unveiling  was carried out by  Ms. Rebecca Sera Caine, grand-daughter of Sir Ivor Jennings in the presence of Prof. K.M. de Silva, the Chancellor, Prof. Upul B. Dissanayake, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. R.L. Wijeyeweera the Co-Chair of the  Diamond Jubilee Committee and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya and Mr. Timothy William Richards, spouse of Ms. Rebecca Caine and the  other distinguish guests including the  Deans of nine  Faculties and  Directors of the Postgraduate Institutes of the University of Peradeniya.

After unveiling the statue at  the entrance to the Senate building, a short but a colourful ceremony was held at the Arts Theatre of the University of Peradeniya. This ceremony commenced with the traditional lighting of the oil lamp followed by the University anthem.

The Vice-Chancellor Prof. Upul B. Dissanayake made his address along with the welcome. ¬†He briefly highlighted the history of the inception of the University of Peradeniya and the valuable landmark contribution made by Sir Ivor Jennings towards the establishment of the University of Peradeniya.¬† ¬†The Chancellor Prof. K.M. De Silva¬† addressed the gathering with his reminiscent comments on ¬†Sir Ivor Jennings,¬† being a student during the time of Sir Ivor Jennings. ¬†Emeritus Professor KNO Dharmadasa ¬†delivered the key note address highlighting the great service rendered to the ¬†University of Peradeniya not only in the initial planning of the University but also on the efforts taken by Sir Ivor Jennings to maintain the quality of education at the highest level which in turn paved the way for our degrees to be recognized by the Universities in Britain.¬† ¬†Ms. Rebecca Caine, the grand-daughter of Sir Ivor Jennings, the Chief guest of the day in her speech exchanged her views about her grandfather’s commitment and love towards the University and Sri Lanka.¬† She also noted with gratitude that the statue unveiled today was just an ideal replica of him and congratulated the University for making a perfect statue. ¬†¬†In her speech she also ¬†mentioned that her parents, that is the daughter of Sir Ivor Jennings ¬†got married at St. Paul’s Church, ¬†Kandy and that ¬†the reception was held at the Vice-Chancellor’s lodge where ¬†Sir Ivor Jennings lived during his tenure.¬†¬† A souvenir in memory of this occasion ¬†was presented to the Chief guest Ms. Rebecca, the Chancellor Prof. K.M. de Silva and Emeritus Prof. KNO Dharmadasa¬† by the Vice-Chancellor and the Co-Chair of ¬†the ¬†Diamond Jubilee Committee Prof. R.L. Wijeyeweera.¬†¬† Simultaneously a ¬†Coffee Table Book edited by Mr. S.A.C. Mohamed Zuhyle and Dr. R.M.K. Rathnayake ¬†¬†was presented to the Chief Guest & the Chancellor on behalf of the ¬†1966 batch of the University of Peradeniya by Mr. Zuhyle.¬† The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the Co-Chair Diamond Jubilee Committee and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof. R.L. Wijeyeweera.¬†
