The inaugural event of the Peradeniya Diamond Jubilee Celebration

Peradeniya university has planned a series of activities to celebrate its 75th birth day which falls in July 2017. The inauguration of the Diamond jubilee celebrations was held on Tuesday, 10th January 2017 at the university Gymnasium with the participation of the Chancellor Prof. P. W. Epasinghe, Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic & Non Academic Staff and Students. The Vice Chancellor Prof. Upul B. Disanayake delivered the welcome address and declared open the Jubilee celebrations. An eminent alumnus and world rewarded diplomat Dr. Jayantha Dhanapala delivered the jubilee Oration. The first Vice-Chancellor of the autonomous University renamed as the “University of Peradeniya” under the Universities Act of 1978, Emeritus Prof.  B. L. Panditharatne and the first Registrar, Mr. M.B. Adikaram, delivered speeches highlighting their past experiences at the University. A video presentation highlighting the milestones of the university prepared by Dr. Madawa Meegaskumbura, a dancing performance by undergraduate students and a cultural event ("Sinhaya") performed by Dr. Rohana Seneviratne of the Faculty of Arts added glamour to the event. The co-chair of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations committee, Prof. Sunethra Rajapakshe proposed the vote of thanks. Over 3,000 participants  including students, employees, emeritus Professors, former vice chancellors, former Registrars and about 100 special guests had gathered to grace the occasion.
