Official opening of the new Advanced Materials Research Laboratory (AMReL) of the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science

Official opening of the new Advanced Materials Research Laboratory (AMReL) of the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, University of Peradeniya was held on 1st August 2019. Prof. S.R. Kodithuwakku, Dean, Faculty of Science, Prof. H.M.G.T.A. Pitawala, Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Science, Prof. M.A.K.L. Dissanayake, Research professor at the National Institute of Fundamental Studies, Head of the Department of Physics, all other Heads of Departments of the Faculty of Science as well as all the academic, temporary staff and non- academic staff members of the Department of Physics participated the opening ceremony. The laboratory was ceremonially opened by Prof. S.R. Kodithuwakku by the invitation of Principal Research Investigator of AMReL, Dr. B. S. Dassanayake of the Department of Physics.

The AMReL is expected to receive state-of-the-art instruments through a grant awarded by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Research, Sri Lanka under the ‚ÄúSolar- Edu Training Project‚ÄĚ to facilitate R&D activities to promote thin film solar cell research in Sri Lanka. The multi phased project, have been organizing many events to educate general public and school children about the importance of solar energy in addition to the R&D work on thin film solar cells which is the brain-child of Prof. S. Sivananthan, Professor in Physics at University of Illinois at Chicago, USA and Prof. M.A.K.L. Dissanayake
