International Conference on Transforming Agricultural Extension Systems: Towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for Global Impact

The Department of Agricultural Extension, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Agricultural Extension Association (SLAEA), participatory Rural Development Initiatives Society (PRDIS), Hyderabad, India, and Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University, Hyderabad, Telangana, India organized the International Conference in Agricultural Extension which was held during May 10th& 11th , 2018 in Kandy. The Conference was coordinated by Dr. Chandana Jayawardena, Senior Lecturer, Agricultural Extension Department, Faculty of Agriculture and President of Sri Lanka Agricultural Extension Association. Over two hundred delegates, including nearly 100 foreign delegates from eight countries and acclaimed international organizations & universities attended the conference. Dr. Daniel Gustafson, Deputy Director General (Programmes), FAO, Rome delivered the key note address. Conference focused on major SDGs relating to farming communities and targeted Agricultural Extension strategies that could play crucial role in achieving the targets and transforming the future of agricultural development. After the Inauguration, conference was divided into 04 substantive parallel sessions and working groups, providing extension organizations the opportunity to focus on specific areas from their own perspective and national & regional experiences. At the end of the parallel sessions’ participants deliberated on conclusions in a plenary session. The Policy brief recommendations for the enhancement of Agricultural Extension in Sri Lanka and the Directory of Agricultural Extension Professionals in Sri Lanka were launched at the conference. This also marked the 70th Anniversary celebrations of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya.
