Opening of the Centre for Research in Oral Cancer & 3rd International Conference on “Oral Cancer, Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders, Smokeless Tobacco and Areca nut”

Third international conference on “oral cancer, oral potentially malignant disorders, smokeless tobacco and areca nut” organized by the centre for Research in Oral Cancer (CROC) was successfully completed on 14th July 2019 at K bambaradeniya Auditorium, Faculty of Dental Sciences. The theme of the event was “towards a society free of oral cancer". This event was joiecanutntly organized by the Centre for Research in Oral Cancer of the Faculty of Dental Sciences, University of Peradeniya, Ministry of Health, SLT project committee of the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol (NATA) and Presidential Task Force on Drug Prevention.

First pre conference workshop was held on the 12th on the topic of Smokeless Tobacco and Areca nut control in Sri Lanka. This workshop was conducted with the participation of all stake holders and a strategic plan for the next five years was discussed and finalized. Second workshop on Imaging and diagnostic aids in the management of Oral cancer and OPMD was held at the CPC hall on the same day.

The chief guest for the inauguration was Prof Upul B. Dissanayake, Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya and the guest of honor was Dr. Ananda Jayalal, Deputy Director General (Dental) Health Services. Dr. Vajira Jayasinghe, Dean, Faculty of Dental Sciences, Dr. Palitha Abayakoon, Chairman/ NATA, Dr. Samantha Kumara Kithalawarchchi, Former Director/ PTFDP, Prof. WM Tilakaratne, Director CROC and Prof. Ruwan Jayasinghe Secretary CROC were among the dignitaries attended. Prof. Newell Johnson from Griffith University, Australia delivered the key note address.

The well organized scientific session covered epidemiology of OPMD and oral cancer, preventive strategies, clinical presentation of them, surgical management and palliative care. New molecular therapeutic targets and future research prospects were also discussed. Scientific forum was enlightened by national and international resource persons. There was a good participation ranging from experience surgeons, consultants, postgraduates of all disciplines and undergraduate dental students. There were more than 250 participants including academics, consultants, trainees, dental surgeons and students.

Resource persons for this conference included many international speakers namely Prof. Newell Johnson (Australia) Prof. Sok Ching Cheong (Malaysia), Dr. Direndra Singha (India) Dr. Chandramanie More (India), Dr. Prithvi Balepur (India), Dr. V. Bhat (India) and the national panel included Prof. WM Tilakaratne, Dr. Hemantha Amarasinghe, Prof. Ruwan D Jayasinghe, Dr. A.J. Hilmi, Prof. AM Attygalla, Dr. Palitha Abaykoon, Prof. Samadara Siriwardena, Prof. Lilani Ekanayake, Dr. Kalani Hettiarachchi, Dr. Rasika Illeperuma and Dr. Kamal Perera

The conference was well received by all participants. They actively engaged in the panel discussion which was conducted at the end of the conference with the participation of all resource persons to exchange ideas on an oral cancer prevention and management.
