Empowering Women in Politics

The Gender and Women's Education Unit, Dept of Agriculture Extension offered the course (6 months) on Empowering Women in Politics with the generous support given by the Ministry of Women's Affairs and the National Committee on Women. The certificate ware awarded by the Deputy vice Chancellor Prof. R.L. Wijeyeweera and the Dean, Faculty of Agriculture Prof. D.K.N.G. Pushpakumarae to 35 participants who successfully completed the course on the 18th Feb. 2017 at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya. The initiatives pertinent to this course was taken by Prof Kamala Liyanage and it was coordinated by Dr Wijaya Jayathilake, Ms, Shobana Rajendran and Prof Liyanage. Eight courses, viz.the concept of gender, feminist approaches to politics, women and law, women and human rights, the constitutions of Sri Lanka, Government and politics of Sri Lanka and women and politics were offered during this programme and finally the participants were assigned one-month internship. About 15 participants are aspiring to run for the next local government elections in Sri Lanka.
