International Pali Conference ‚Äď 2016

The 2nd International Pali Conference organized by the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya was successfully held at the University Senate Premises on Friday, 28th of October, 2016. The inauguration took place at the Senate Room of the University from 7.45 am with the arrival of guests presided by the Chief Guest Most Venerable Niyangoda Sri Vijithasiri Anunayaka Thero of the Malwatta Chapter in Siyam Nikaya. All participants of the event were welcomed by Ven. Dr. Bamunugama Shanthawimala, Head of the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies on behalf of the Departmental members. Prof. P. D. Premasiri who is an Emeritus Professor of the University did the keynote speech in Pali language on the conference theme "PńĀvacanatthavibhńĀvanńĀya Atthasa√ľva√Ķ√ĶanńĀvidhńę" (Exegetical Methodologies for the Illumination of the Buddhavacana). The Vice Chancellor, the Deputy Vice Chancellor and the Deans of the Faculties were among the office bearers who participated in the event. The certificates and prizes were awarded to the winners and participants of Inter-Pirivena Competition held parallel to the conference. The Conference Chair was held by Ven. Prof. Muwaetagama Gnanananda, the Professor of Pali and Buddhist Studies in the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies.

After the inauguration, five technical sessions in which researchers launched their findings were held. In the Preliminary Session presided by Ven. Prof. Medagoda Abhayatissa, scholars presented their papers directly related to the conference sub-themes as an approach to the next sessions. The other four sessions were held as two parallel sessions of which each consists of two sessions. The chairs were held by Ven. Prof. Medagampitiye Wijithadhamma, Ven. Dr. Bamunugama Shanthawimala, Prof. P. B. Meegaskumbura and Prof. Ratna Wijethunga. The competent scholars had the opportunity to examine their notions with new-coming researchers who also contributed to the sessions through moderating the papers. In the concluding ceremony, the certificates were awarded to the presenters who contributed to the event and On behalf of the Organizing Committee, the Chairperson of the Conference Ven. Prof. Muwaetagama Gnananananda conveyed his gratitude and appreciation to all those who were supportive in organizing this event which has already become one of the most remarkable annual events of the University.
