Prof. B.M.N.W.B. Balasooriya has been appointed as the Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Science (PGIS), University of Peradeniya, effective 15th February 2025. A distinguished academic and administrator, Prof. Balasooriya has made significant contributions to higher education, research, and national development. An expert in geology, he has led numerous research initiatives, fostering both national and international collaborations. His extensive administrative experience includes serving as Acting Head of the Department of Geology, Acting Director of the Department of Physical Education, Proctor of the University of Peradeniya, and Chairman of the Board of Study in Earth Sciences, PGIS.
He has also played a pivotal role in policy development and quality assurance at the University of Peradeniya. Additionally, he currently serves as a Member of the Board of Directors of Kahatagaha Graphite Lanka Ltd. and the Geological Survey & Mines Bureau (GSMB) under the Ministry of Environment. Under his leadership, PGIS is set to achieve new heights in academic excellence, research innovation, and postgraduate education, further strengthening its reputation as a premier institution in science and technology.
