Prof. Sarath Abayakoon Appointed as Governor of the Central Province: A Distinguished Career of Leadership

Prof. Sarath Abayakoon has been appointed as the Governor of the Central Province, Sri Lanka, a role that reflects his distinguished career in leadership. The University of Peradeniya congratulates Prof. Abayakoon, who has significantly contributed to both the university and the nation.

A graduate in Civil Engineering with First Class Honours from the University of Peradeniya in 1979, he earned his Master of Applied Science and PhD from the University of British Columbia, Canada. Joining the University of Peradeniya in 1988 as a Senior Lecturer, he rose through the ranks, becoming a full Professor in 2004 and a Senior Professor in 2006.

Prof. Abayakoon held numerous key administrative positions, including Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and was the Vice Chancellor of the University from 2009 to 2021. His leadership was pivotal in enhancing academic excellence and the quality of learning. Additionally, he has served as the Chairman of the Engineering Council Sri Lanka (ECSL) since 2018.
