Sexual and Gender-Based Harassment and Sexual Violence Prevention Committee (SGBVC) of the University of Peradeniya

Our Vision:

Foster and maintain a learning and working environment at the University of Peradeniya in which the dignity and equality of all persons are respected and is free of harassment and violence, including sexual or gender-based harassment and sexual violence irrespective of sexual and/or gender identities or expression.

Our Mission:

Create a learning and working environment that is free of sexual and gender-based harassment and violence for all members of the university community through;
• implementing the SGBV policy and bylaws
• finding novel ways to address the issue of SGBV at the university
so that all persons are enabled to attain their educational or career objectives without fear and intimidation.

In 2018, the Governing Council of the University of Peradeniya;
• ratified the Policy and Bylaws on Sexual and Gender-Based Harassment and Sexual Violence Prevention.
• appointed the Sexual and Gender-Based Harassment and Sexual Violence Prevention Committee (SGBVC) to help implement the SGBV Policy.

Aims and Objectives of the SGBV Committee:

In order to achieve this Vision, The University of Peradeniya strives to be

  • • to prevent the occurrence of harassment and violence
  • • to implement prompt, effective, and fair mechanisms to inquire and resolve complaints
  • • to facilitate adequate and appropriate support for victims of harassment and violence

The SGBV Committee assists the University in implementing the above aims and objectives by;

  • awareness-raising among members of the university community about what constitutes SGBV
  • assisting the university to investigate complaints
  • mediating between university authorities and victims where necessary to ensure the best possible outcome for the victim/s based on the nature of the complaint
  • assisting victims to find redress relating to their complaints always keeping the victim’s interests foremost.

    • The SGBV Committee invites all members of the university community to work together with us to turn the University into a harassment and violence free institution.
