Ceremonial launch of the handbook for University students and staff on “Preventing Sexual and Gender-Based Harassment and Sexual Violence in the University of Peradeniya” to the Vice-Chancellor and other distinguished invitees took place on 27th February 2023, from 9.00 AM – 9.30 AM in the Senate room, University of Peradeniya. The handbook is the product of a group effort by the members of the Sexual and Gender-based Harassment and Sexual Violence Prevention Committee (SGBVC) of the University of Peradeniya. It comes in all three languages and the hard copies will be distributed among the first-year students of the University while soft copies will be uploaded to the University website.
The event started with a brief introduction regarding the booklet by Prof. Carmen Wickramagamage, Chairperson, SGBVC followed by a speech by the Vice-Chancellor which emphasized the importance of making the university population aware of issues related to sexual and gender-based harassment and sexual violence. The event concluded with acknowledgments by Prof. Charmalie Abeysekara, former Secretary of SGBVC. Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Deans of Faculties, the Acting Registrar, the Proctor, and members of the SGBVC were among the distinguished guests who graced the occasion.
