The 12 th session of the Vice Chancellor’s Lecture Series was successfully conducted on 21 st of May 2025 at 12.30 p.m. in the Senate Room of the University of Peradeniya.
The speaker for the event was His Excellency, Mr. Levan Dzhagaryan, Ambassador of the Russian Federation in the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and to the Republic of Maldives. His Excellency delivered an insightful speech on “Russia-Sri Lanka Relations: Strengthening Educational and Cultural Collaboration” highlighting the longstanding bilateral cooperation between our two nations. From being one of the top importers of Ceylon tea, Russia has also assisted in the establishment of the sugar factory in Sri Lanka, supporting Sri Lanka during the economic crisis as well as during COVID 19 pandemic providing the necessary vaccines. Further there are many Sri Lankan students persuing their Medical degrees in Russia, while a large number of Russian tourists visiting Sri Lanka every year. His Excellency further briefed about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and praised Sri Lankan government’s neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict and appreciated US President Donald Trump’s efforts to settle the conflict.
The audience included the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor, the Press-Secretary, and the Second Secretary of the Russian Embassy, Mr. German Fedorov, the Deans of the Faculties, as well as academic, and non-academic staff members. The Vice Chancellor’s Lecture Series is aimed to provide the University community with a distinctive opportunity to engage with and learn from eminent speakers and professionals in their respective fields of expertise. It serves as a platform for intellectual enrichment, fostering a vibrant exchange of ideas and knowledge within the academic community.
