University of Peradeniya stepped forward to conserve Mahaweli River Bank

University of Peradeniya in collaboration with Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority launched a Bamboo Tree Planting Program intending to conserve the river Mahaweli and its ecosystem.

The program’s first phase was initiated by planting a few bamboo saplings on the right bank of River Mahaweli near Sarasavi Medura Hall premises on 20th January 2023. Prof. Terrence Madhujith, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Ruwan Jayasingha, the Proctor of the University, Prof. Tilak Hewawasam, the Director of the Center for Environmental Sustainability, Mr. Asantha Bandara, Curator of the University,  Ms. Nilmini Ekanayake, Assistant Director of Forest and Environment Conservation Division of Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority, and the residents of the Sarasavi Medura hall participated in the event.
