The University of Peradeniya (UOP) has initiated promising discussions with the Fujian Provincial Center of Science and Technology Achievement Transformation to explore the co-establishment of a Maritime Silk Road Technology Transfer Centre at the University of Peradeniya.

The preliminary meeting, held on 26th November 2024 at the Vice Chancellor’s office, laid the groundwork for a collaboration focused on technology transfer in areas such as edible fungi cultivation, capacity development of academic staff, online learning for students, and joint research. A key future goal is the joint establishment of a “Mushroom Research Centre” at UOP, focusing on high-yield variety breeding.

The discussions were led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Terrence Madhujith, and the Chinese delegation, which included Mr. Lin Kuiran, Director General of Fujian Innovation Research Institute, and Mr. Zhang Hua, Director of the Fujian Provincial Center of Science and Technology Achievement Transformation. Prof. Barana Jayawardena, the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Palitha Weerakkody, the Acting Head of the Department, Department of Crop Science and Prof. Chalinda Beneragama, the Director of the Academic Affairs Division, also took part in the meeting.

This partnership marks a major step in deepening Sri Lanka-China scientific cooperation and talent development.
