A Workshop on Drafting and Prosecution

A workshop on Drafting and Prosecution was held on 16 August 2017 at the Senate Room, University of Peradeniya.

Introducing Enabling IP Environment (EIE) project to the University, make aware the researches on basis strategies of patent search and drafting and make understanding the background of the ongoing University researchers were the main objectives of the workshop.

The workshop was commenced with the Welcome Address by Prof. Upul B. Dissanayake, Vice- Chancellor, University of Peradeniya and the Opening Remarks was presented by Mrs. Suganthi Kadirgamar, Senior Attorney at Law where she composited the factors of history of patent procedures, laws and policies of patent application process and obtaining and protecting and selling the patents in relation.

The main session was conducted by Dr. Rohitha Jayasuriya, Patent Attorney, USA. He brought out an in detailed lecture on Patent Law, Search Strategies and Drafting Techniques. And further in advance, discussions on rights of Intellectual Property, how to be qualified with IP knowledge, Patent requirements and the Phases of the patent procedure. Also he provided guidelines for proper Abstract presentations including the drawings and other required information.

Further, the clarifications on the areas of patent prior art searches and patent drafting techniques, importance of Intellectual Property (IP) culture in Universities, introduction to EIE project were marked by Prof. Ajith De Alwis, Director, COSTI.

Dr. Rohitha Prasanna, Convener, Dr. Dharshana Yapa, Dr. Manjula Sandirigama, Dr. Nanda Gunwardhana, Director, InRC and Miss. Rasika Wickramasinghe, The Legal Officer marked their presence on behalf of the IP Committee, University of Peradeniya.

Q&A session was conducted for the audience and they were able to acquire and share knowledge and experiences in related to the discussed areas. Considerable numbers of academicians of University of Peradeniya along with several out comers from other academic institutions were privileged to obtain the benefits of the sessions.

The workshop was organized by IP Committee University of Peradeniya and the International Research Centre (InRC) along with the co- organizers of Coordinating Secretariat for Science and Innovation (COSTI) and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
