The second group of students from the Hokkaido University visited the University of Peradeniya for a student exchange program from 17th to 28th August 2015. Hokkaido University team consisted of six students and two professors, namely, Prof. Tamashiro Hiko and Dr. Noriaki Hosoda.
Visiting students received the opportunity to take part in a number of activities organized by the International Research Centre together with the International Interaction Club of University of Peradeniya.
On their first day at the University, they did a walking tour of the campus followed by a Sri Lankan Dance Programme. During the next two days, the students participated for a series of lectures conducted by a few scholars from the Department of Sociology, University of Peradeniya, namely, Prof. H. M. D. R. Herath, Prof. S. Pinnawala on various topics related to Sri Lanka such as Introduction to Sri Lankan history, Ethnicity and Identity crisis in Sri Lanka, Health definition and health promotion and, heritage sites in Sri Lanka.
In the mean time, the team from the Hokkaido University also visited a number of tourist attractions with historical and cultural significance in Sri Lanka. Among the places they visited, were the Temple of Tooth, botanical gardens at Peradeniya, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya and Dambulla, Pilimathalawa tea factory, Pinnawala elephant orphanage, Ambekka temple, a brass work village in Gadaladeniya, and Gadaladeniya temple.
After the field visits the students came back to the university to attend a lecture series on challenges in post-war rebuilding in Sri Lanka by Professor Tudor Silva, Pali Buddhism by Dr. Noriaki Hosoda, and another lecture by Professor Tudor Silva on Sri Lanka Japan relationship. On 25th August, visiting students from the Hokkaido University presented their experience in Sri Lanka followed by an exchange session of cricket with the students of the International Interaction Club at the University Cricket ground. A valedictory dinner was organized at the Earl’s Regency Hotel, Kandy where certificates of participation were presented to all the members of the Hokkaido University who visited the University of Peradeniya. The programme was concluded successfully on 26th August 2015 providing opportunities to the students from both universities to interact and learn about each other.
