University of Peradeniya and Hokkaido University, Japan Student Exchange Programme March 2017 was conducted in the Month of March. The 10-day programme was taken place from 2 – 13 March 2017 at the University of Peradeniya. The Programme theme was “Peace Process and History of a Diverse and Multicultural Country, Sri Lanka”, and it included a lecture series and several field visits. The orientation programme was taken place on 2 March at the University of Peradeniya with an introduction to the University and the Programme. After which they proceeded to visit historical places including Sigiriya, Dambulla, Anuradhapura, and Polonnaruwa. The lectures were conducted by Professor Sisira Pinnawala, Professor HMDR Herath, Dr. Ramani Hettiarachchi and Ven.Bamunugama Shanthawimala.
The students of the International Interaction Club (InIC) of the University of Peradeniya participated in the interaction sessions and events. The programme included visits to Temple of the Tooth, Bahirawakanda Temple, Gadaladeniya Temple, Peradeniya Botanical Garden and Giragama Tea Factory.
The students also did a campus tour guided by the students from the InIC where they could learn about the University of Peradeniya, its history and the campus environment. Activities at UoP with the students of the InIC included the university tour, cricket match, and traditional food exchange session with students from both Universities and at the end of the programme, students from the two universities did presentations about their experiences in Sri Lanka. Members from the University Explorers’ Club participated in the programme in the hike to Utuwankanda.
The visiting team included four students and two staff members. Professor Michelle La Fay, Associate Professor and Head of International Affairs Unit of the Hokkaido University and Ms. Naoko NAITO, programme coordinator at the Office for Nitobe Program for Graduate Students, Academic Affairs Division of Hokkaido University visited the UoP with the Hokkaido Exchange student team. The Hokkaido Alumni members of the University of Peradeniya also contributed to the programme.
To conclude the program, a valedictory dinner and certificate ceremony was held for the Hokkaido team at Thilanka Hotel. The event was participated by students from both Universities, resource persons, and as well as Hokkaido alumni members of the University of Peradeniya.
