The fifth session of the Vice Chancellor’s Lecture Series is scheduled to be held on 17th of April 2024 at 1.00 p.m. in the Senate Room of the University of Peradeniya.

University Explorers Team becomes the First University Team to Reach the Island Peak of the Himalayan Range

Team of six students of the Explorers Club of the University of Peradeniya embarked on the expedition to traverse Himalayan on April 8 th . On Saturday April 27 th the team successfully reached the Island Peak situated 6189 m above mean sea level. This is the 14 th time that a team from Peradeniya trekked Himalayan, however, no university team from Sri Lanka has ever reached this height. The team comprises of J.A. Harsha Dharmapriya (Engineering), H.M.H.R.B. Mannapperuma (Agriculture), W.H.M. Dilshan (Arts), R.M.T.T.B. Samarakoon (Science), H.M.C.S. Madawela (Engineering), and M.A. Sanduni Kanchana (Engineering). This is the first time that a female student joined the Himalayan expedition. The team underwent training at Peradeniya over nearly six months to face severe challenges in trekking the Himalayan range. The students were guided by the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and the Senior Treasurer of the Explorers Club, Dr. Jagath Gunatilake. The University wholeheartedly congratulates the team.

The University Experience

The University of Peradeniya is heir to the  University of Ceylon which was established in 1942.  It is the largest and best-endowed university in Sri Lanka. It has eight faculties (schools) and 72 academic departments, an undergraduate enrolment of approximately 9000 and a postgraduate enrolment of approximately 2000. It has a diverse student body with students representing all geographic regions and ethnic communities of the country, as well as several international students.
